Aasai Mugam Lyrics

What is the meaning of Aasai Mugam lyrics?

This song, a timeless composition by Mahakavi Subramanya Bharathiyar, expresses the profound anguish of a person who has forgotten the beloved's face, despite their heart still holding deep affection. The speaker laments this loss of memory, questioning how the heart can retain love while the mind loses the visual essence of the loved one. The lyrics convey a deep sense of longing and despair, as the speaker sees only incomplete visions and misses the beloved's full beauty and smile. The emotional core of the song lies in the speaker's self-reproach and the feeling of being utterly lost without the memory of the beloved's face. The lines "If Kannan's face is forgotten, what use are these eyes?" highlight the depth of this despair, suggesting that life itself loses meaning without the cherished image. The song beautifully captures the universal pain of separation and the torment of a fading memory, whether interpreted as a devotee's yearning for the divine Krishna or a lover's sorrow for a lost partner.
