Paayum Alai Lyrics

What is the meaning of Paayum Alai lyrics?

This song, 'Paayum Alai', from the 1949 film 'Kanniyin Kadhali Tamil', is a poignant lament sung by a sister to the ocean after it has taken her beloved elder brother. The lyrics express profound grief, anger, and a sense of betrayal directed at the vast, indifferent sea. The sister questions the ocean's cruelty, comparing her bond with her brother to the inseparable harmony of a Veena and its melody, now shattered. Her sorrow is palpable as she pleads for his return, threatening to end her own life if he is not given back, and invoking the powerful curse of a grieving woman. The song captures the raw emotion of loss and the desperate plea of a loved one. It highlights themes of familial love, the overwhelming power of nature, and the deep pain of separation. The lyricist, Kannadasan, masterfully uses metaphors like the Veena and its melody, and the ocean swallowing the sun, to convey the depth of the sister's despair and her perception of the ocean as a heartless entity. The final lines serve as a powerful warning, emphasizing the profound impact of an innocent woman's tears and curse, underscoring the emotional weight of her suffering.
