Song Meaning & Analysis
The song "Puriyavillai" beautifully captures the bewildering and overwhelming emotions of first love. The protagonist expresses a profound sense of confusion, unable to comprehend why their heart is melting for the first time or why the memory of a particular person lingers so persistently. This new, inexplicable feeling is likened to seeing a rainbow in their eyes, a beautiful yet mysterious phenomenon, indicating a complete shift in their perception and emotional state. The lyrics convey a feeling of being swept off their feet, where familiar routines and surroundings no longer hold the same meaning, and their usual self is lost in this novel experience.
Throughout the song, the protagonist describes the profound impact of this newfound love on their daily life. Dreams extend beyond waking hours, and even the mundane 'school' (perhaps a metaphor for the person or the feelings associated with them) remains unforgettable. They feel detached from their usual social circles, their speech lacks its former vigor, and they are left speechless by the intensity of their emotions. The world around them seems altered – rain doesn't feel wet, trees cast no shadows, and they feel as if they're floating, disconnected from reality. The repeated refrain of "I don't understand" underscores the central theme of innocent bewilderment and the powerful, transformative, yet sometimes 'cruel' nature of love.
