Song Meaning & Analysis
The song is a powerful social commentary and a call for justice, highlighting the stark inequalities prevalent in society. It speaks from the perspective of the working class and the poor, emphasizing their suffering due to hunger and exploitation. The lyrics criticize those who profit by oppressing the laborers and accumulating wealth, warning of an impending class revolution. It questions the value of immense riches when basic necessities like food and clothing are denied to many.
Furthermore, the song invokes the ideologies of prominent Tamil social reformers, Periyar and Arignar Anna, advocating for rationalism, discarding outdated traditions, and embracing a path of love and equality. It laments that despite achieving independence on August 15th, the socio-economic conditions for the poor have remained unchanged for thirty years (referring to 1981, 34 years after 1947). The song culminates in a demand for communism, where work is compensated according to effort and needs are met, envisioning a nation revitalized by a "new blood" of equitable principles.
