Sondhangale Lyrics

What is the meaning of Sondhangale lyrics?

This song, "Sondhangale," from the 1985 film 'Aduthathu Albert,' is a poignant lament reflecting on profound loss and the futility of societal norms in the face of tragedy. The lyrics, penned by Vairamuthu, paint a picture of a community grappling with an unexpected death or a devastating event, possibly a failed marriage that led to a tragic outcome. The singer addresses relatives and kinsfolk, urging them to articulate their sorrow, while questioning the very principles (dharma) that might have contributed to the situation. The song powerfully contrasts the joyous preparations for a wedding – fixing dates, lighting sacred fires, and adorning with flowers – with the grim reality of a garland turning into a funeral wreath, highlighting how quickly life's celebrations can turn into mourning. The song delves deeper into the emotional aftermath, questioning the relevance of caste and horoscopes when faced with ultimate loss. It portrays the heart-wrenching image of a loved one carrying a funeral bier, forgetting all joy, and a mother's paradoxical act of giving life and then performing rituals for the departed. The lyrics poignantly ask if such deep sorrow will ever heal, emphasizing the enduring pain. Overall, "Sondhangale" is a melancholic reflection on fate, societal pressures, and the overwhelming grief that renders all other concerns meaningless, leaving listeners with a profound sense of empathy for the characters' plight.
